FREE Landscape and Weed Management Workshop
Join the Environmental Resource Center (ERC), Wood River Land Trust, and Blaine County Noxious Weed Department for a free Landscape and Weed Management Workshop on Thursday, April 13, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Community Campus in Hailey. Coffee and snacks will be provided at 8:30 am.
This workshop is open to and designed for landscapers, property managers, and interested community members. Participants will learn about practical lawn care and weed management; noxious weed biology and control methods; and sustainable soils and composting. Speakers include: Matt Nelson of Magic Valley Turfgrass; John Franson of Wilbur-Ellis Company; and Lauren Golden, Extension Educator for University of Idaho – Blaine County.

9:00 – 10:00: Matt Nelson, Owner, Magic Valley Turf and Bent Grass
- Benefits of lawns in the landscape; choosing the right species
- Cultural management tips – soils, mowing, sunlight, airflow, design
- Irrigation – frequency, intensity, timing, methods
- Pest control – cultural, chemical, biological
- Fertilization -synthetic and/or organic products; soil testing
- Putting it all together – environmental awareness and community stewardship
10:00-11:00: John Fransom, Wilbur-Ellis Co, Noxious Weed Specialist
Weed biology and weed control strategies for noxious weeds and pasture situations in the Wood River Valley with emphasis on getting most out of your herbicide application.
* Targeted plants for discussion will be Rush Skelatonweed, Hoary alyssum, Houndstongue, and Japanese yew.
11:00 -11:30: Lauren Golden, University of Idaho, Extension Educator
Introduction to sustainable soils, soil health issues, and management techniques with a focus on chemical-alternative strategies (such as composting) and an exploration of local tools and resources that are available to the community.
11:30 – 12:00: John Cenarrusa, Blaine County Noxious Weed, Superintendent
John will explain how Blaine County takes calls (can be anonymous) regarding noxious weeds on properties.
About the Presenters:
Matt Nelson, Owner of Magic Valley Turf and Bent Grass – Matt has been involved in the turfgrass industry for 30 years and has consulted at more than 1,500 properties and delivered more than 275 presentations regarding turfgrass management in more than a dozen countries. He has a M.S. in Turf Science from WSU and a B.S. in Environmental Science from Willamette University.
John Franson, Wilber Ellis Company – John has worked for Wilbur-Ellis Company for over 20 years. His main focus is Noxious Weed Management, Turf and Ornamental Businesses, and Seed Treatments. John has a B.S. in Horticulture from Utah State University and an associates’ degree in Horticulture from Ricks College.
Lauren Golden, Extension Educator for University of Idaho – Blaine County – Lauren has served as the Extension Educator for University of Idaho – Blaien County since 2009. She a B.S. in Ecology and Environmental Biology and M.S. in Geography and Planning, Appalachian State University. Her certificats include: Beef Quality Assurance Certification, Idaho Beef Quality Assurance, February 10, 2014; Approved Inspector, Idaho State Department of Agriculture Noxious Weed Free Forage and Straw Program, 2009-present; Statewide Pesticide Consultant License, Idaho State Department of Agriculture, 2009-present.
